CEMEX participates in road safety initiative led by Mayor of London

November 1, 2019

CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (“CEMEX”) (NYSE: CX) announced today that, in recognition of the company’s leadership in safety for Vulnerable Road Users, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, selected its Stepney Concrete Plant as the location for launching his Direct Vision Standard (DVS) safety scheme. This world-leading scheme to remove the most dangerous Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) from London’s streets was launched by the Mayor, Transport for London (TfL), and London Councils.

The first of its kind, the DVS tackles road danger at its source by minimizing HGV blind spots which contribute to accidents. Based on how much a driver can see directly through their cab windows, the unique star system rates HGVs over 12 tons from zero (lowest) to five (highest). HGVs will need to meet a minimum ‘one-star’ rating by the time enforcement begins to enable them to operate in London, or will need to fit ‘Safe System’ measures to improve the vehicle’s safety.

Owners of vehicles rated zero-star will need to improve the overall safety of their vehicle by fitting a ‘Safe System’ to reduce the risk it presents to people walking, cycling, and riding motorcycles before enforcement begins. This system includes a camera monitoring system, a noise alert when turning left, and sensors. Fitting the ‘Safe System’ will not improve a vehicle's DVS star rating, but will bring the safety standard of the vehicle up to allow operators to apply for a Safety Permit.

“I’m proud of our world-leading plans to remove the most dangerous vehicles from London’s streets. So many of the tragic deaths on our roads involve HGVs and this new scheme will help save lives,” said Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, “Forward-looking businesses have already been choosing safer vehicles in the run up to HGV safety permits becoming available. The scheme has gone live, and operators now have 12 months to upgrade their fleets, helping make our streets much safer for people walking and cycling.”

Sadiq Khan visited CEMEX’s Stepney Concrete Plant to see DVS trucks in action. All of the vehicles that CEMEX operates in London meet or exceed the minimum DVS requirements in place until 2024.

“We’re honored to welcome Sadiq Khan and the TfL team to our Stepney plant as the Direct Vision Standard is launched. DVS is a landmark scheme that will ensure that all road users and pedestrians are safe as they come across HGVs while moving around the city. We fully support the program; safety is CEMEX’s number one priority and informs all aspects of our operation,” said David Hart, CEMEX’s Supply Chain Director for the UK. “We are committed for our fleet to continue reflect the latest advancements in safety features. In the UK, we are proud to be a FORS Gold operator and compliant with the CLOCS standard and are just as committed to the Direct Vision Standard for HGVs. We look forward to continuing to work with the Mayor, TfL, and London Councils for safer roads and streets here in London and beyond.”

The safety of UK Vulnerable Road Users is now embedded in CEMEX's DNA. We have successfully influenced the wider public audience and, more significantly, other transport-related organizations. CEMEX’s Vulnerable Road Users model consists of the following: Education for drivers, Collaboration with industry experts and other organizations, Community activities with local authorities, focus groups etc., Raising Awareness with public and the correct Vehicle Specification for safety features.

CEMEX promotes the best Health & Safety practices across the organization as its top priority. For example, CEMEX has invested globally over U.S.$17 million in specific safety features for the company’s trucks to help improve road safety. Through these and other efforts, CEMEX continues to work hard so that all its employees and contractors become an integral part of its health and safety culture, while advancing toward the company’s ultimate target of zero injuries worldwide.

From defensive driving training and safety features for the company’s trucks to innovative branding campaigns, CEMEX aims to make streets a safe place for drivers and vulnerable road users, including motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians. CEMEX has invested in safety equipment for the company’s trucks including additional mirrors to increase the drivers’ scope of visibility, warning signs, vehicle sensors, and camera systems that alert the drivers to potential dangers, among others. These features are also being added to CEMEX’s regular contractors’ vehicles.

CEMEX is a global building materials company that provides high quality products and reliable services. CEMEX has a rich history of improving the wellbeing of those it serves through innovative building solutions, efficiency advancements, and efforts to promote a sustainable future.
